Why people fall for it
Kinsale has a special place in Irish history: the Battle of Kinsale in 1601 marked the end of the old Gaelic order. Today, though, it is better known for its relaxed charm. Its harbor is full of sailing boats, its streets are lined with brightly painted shopfronts and flower boxes, and its small restaurants have earned it a reputation as the gourmet capital of Ireland, with a food festival every autumn.
The Scilly Walk, a gentle path along the water, leads to Charles Fort, a vast 17th-century star fort with views out to the harbor mouth. On the other side, James Fort is quieter and has a beach below. Kinsale is also the start or finish of the Wild Atlantic Way, the 2,500-kilometer coastal route that runs all the way to Donegal.
