Nessebar's old town sits on a small rocky peninsula linked to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Founded by the Thracians and later a Greek colony, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with dozens of medieval churches and wooden houses packed into its lanes.

The old town

Nessebar was once said to have more than forty churches, and the brick and stone ruins of many still stand among the houses. The Church of Christ Pantocrator, with its decorative brickwork and green ceramic disks, and the Church of St. Stephen, filled with frescoes, are the most impressive. Wooden houses from the 19th century line the cobbled streets, and an old windmill stands by the causeway.

Visiting tips

The old town is very busy in July and August, as the huge resort of Sunny Beach lies just across the bay. Come early in the morning or in the evening, or visit in June or September. Boats connect Nessebar with Sozopol and Burgas along the coast.
