Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. Its houses seem to cling to the steep cliffs above the winding Yantra River, and the walls of its royal fortress still crown a hill at the edge of town.

Tsarevets Fortress

Tsarevets, the fortified hill where the tsars and patriarchs once lived, is surrounded on three sides by the river. You can walk its walls, the ruins of the royal palace and climb to the Patriarchal Cathedral at the top. On some evenings, a sound-and-light show illuminates the fortress in colors.

The old town

Gurko Street, one of the oldest in the town, follows the cliff edge with views of the river. Samovodska Charshia, a restored craftsmen's street, has workshops making pottery, copper, knives and sweets. The Monument of the Asen Dynasty stands on the riverbank opposite the old town.

The village of Arbanasi, on a plateau above the town, has fortified houses and churches with rich frescoes.

Visiting tips

The town is very hilly, so comfortable shoes are essential. It is about three hours from Sofia and works well as a stop between the capital and the Black Sea coast.
