Varna is Bulgaria's largest seaside city and the summer capital of the Black Sea coast. Its long seaside park, sandy beaches and lively center are combined with a deep history, from the oldest worked gold in the world to large Roman baths.

The Sea Garden and beaches

The Sea Garden, a park that stretches for several kilometers along the coast, is the place for a walk under the trees, with fountains, monuments and steps leading down to the beaches. In summer, the beach promenade fills with bars and cafés, and the resorts of Golden Sands and St. Constantine and Helena lie just to the north.

History in the city center

The Cathedral of the Dormition, with its golden domes, stands at the head of the pedestrian Knyaz Boris I Boulevard. The Archaeological Museum displays the Varna gold, found in a necropolis near the city and dated to around 4500 BC, making it the oldest worked gold yet discovered. The ruins of the Roman baths, from the 2nd century, are the largest in Bulgaria.

North of the city, the Aladzha Monastery is carved into a limestone cliff.

Visiting tips

July and August are hot and busy, while June and September are perfect for both the beach and walking. Varna has an international airport and good bus links along the coast.
