Vitebsk, on the Western Dvina River in northern Belarus, is one of the country's oldest cities. It is best known as the birthplace of the painter Marc Chagall, whose dreamlike images of its streets and rooftops became famous around the world.
Chagall's Vitebsk
The modest brick house where Chagall grew up is now a museum, and the Marc Chagall Art Center displays his graphic works. In the early 1920s Chagall founded an art school here, where Kazimir Malevich also taught, making Vitebsk briefly a center of the avant-garde.
The old town and the festival
The white Assumption Cathedral rises on a hill above the river, and the restored town hall and Pushkin Bridge are at the heart of the old town. Each July, the Slavianski Bazaar arts festival fills the city with concerts in its open-air amphitheater.
