Grodno, near the borders with Poland and Lithuania, escaped heavy damage in the Second World War and has one of the best-preserved historic centers in Belarus. Its churches, castles and old streets reflect centuries as part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
The historic center
The baroque Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier, known as the Farny Cathedral, dominates the main square with its rich interior and one of the oldest working clocks in Europe. Sovetskaya Street, the pedestrian main street, leads past old houses and cafés, and the Great Choral Synagogue recalls the city's large Jewish community before the war.
Castles and the river
On a hill above the Neman River stand the Old Castle, once the residence of Grand Duke Vytautas and King Stephen Báthory, and the New Castle, a royal palace of the 18th century. Downstream, the 12th-century Kalozha Church, one of the oldest buildings in Belarus, stands on the riverbank.
