Gomel, the second-largest city in Belarus, lies on the high bank of the Sozh River in the southeast. Its centerpiece is a grand palace and landscaped park built by the Russian noble families who owned the town in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The palace and park
The neoclassical Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace stands in a large park on the cliffs above the river, with a chapel-tomb, an observation tower and paths leading down to the water. A long pedestrian bridge crosses the Sozh to beaches and woods on the far bank. The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, beside the park, overlooks the river.
The city center
Sovetskaya Street, the main avenue, runs from Lenin Square through the center, lined with Soviet-era buildings, shops and cafés. The city is quieter than Minsk and easy to explore on foot in a day.
