Brest lies on the border with Poland, where the Bug and Mukhavets rivers meet. It is best known for its 19th-century fortress, which held out against the German invasion in June 1941 and is now one of the largest war memorials of the former Soviet Union.

The Brest Fortress

The fortress memorial is entered through a giant star-shaped gateway cut into a concrete block. Inside, the ruins of barracks and the restored garrison church surround the huge 'Courage' monument, a stone head of a soldier, and the eternal flame. It is a sober, moving place, especially on June 22, the anniversary of the attack.

The town

Sovetskaya Street, the pedestrian main street, is lined with restored buildings, cafés and street lamps. Every evening a lamplighter in uniform walks along it to light the kerosene lamps by hand, a charming local tradition. Belovezhskaya Pushcha, one of the last primeval forests in Europe and home to European bison, is about an hour's drive away.
