Khor Fakkan, part of Sharjah on the Gulf of Oman coast, is a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains. A dramatic road with long tunnels connects it to the rest of the UAE.

The bay

The corniche follows a sandy beach with views of the mountains. An amphitheater and a man-made waterfall have become popular landmarks.

The road

The Khor Fakkan Road crosses the Hajar Mountains through several tunnels and is one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Exploring the bay

The drive in is part of the experience: the modern Khor Fakkan Road cuts through the Hajar Mountains in a series of tunnels, and then suddenly the bay opens up below you. Park near the Corniche and walk along the long sandy beach with mountains behind.

Visit the amphitheater on the waterfront and the waterfall cascading down the rocks nearby, which is lit at night. Boat trips go out to Shark Island, a small rocky islet popular for snorkeling.

Good to know

Khor Fakkan belongs to Sharjah, so the same rules apply: no alcohol and modest dress in public. It is about 90 minutes from Dubai by car.

Weekends get busy with families, so a weekday visit is calmer. Combine it with Fujairah and Dibba for a full day on the east coast.
