Ajman, the smallest of the seven emirates, sits just north of Sharjah. It is known for its relaxed corniche, white sand beach and traditional dhow building yard.

The city

Ajman Museum is housed in an 18th-century fort. The Ajman Corniche is lined with palm trees, cafés and hotels facing a long sandy beach.

The creek

Near the creek, craftsmen still build wooden dhows by hand. The mangroves of Al Zorah are a quiet place for kayaking.

Walking Ajman

Ajman is easy to explore in half a day. Start at the Ajman Museum, inside an 18th-century fort with watchtowers, then walk to the Corniche, where palm trees line a wide, clean beach that rarely feels crowded.

Near the creek, look for the dhow yard, where wooden boats are still built by hand. In the evening, the Corniche cafés fill up and the Marina area lights up, a relaxed scene popular with residents from across the Northern Emirates.

Good to know

Ajman sits right next to Sharjah, about 30 to 45 minutes from Dubai depending on traffic. Hotels here are often cheaper than in Dubai, so some travelers use it as a beach base.

Life is slower and more local than in the big cities, which is exactly its charm. Dress modestly away from the beach and hotel pools.
