Fujairah is the only emirate on the Gulf of Oman coast. Rugged Hajar Mountains, old forts, quiet beaches and coral reefs make it a very different side of the UAE.
History
Fujairah Fort, one of the oldest in the country, overlooks palm groves. Al Bidyah Mosque, a small mud-brick mosque, is believed to be the oldest mosque in the UAE.
Coast and mountains
The corniche runs along the sea, and Snoopy Island near Dibba is popular for snorkeling. Roads through the Hajar Mountains pass wadis and small villages.
A day on the east coast
Fujairah feels like a different country from Dubai. Start at Fujairah Fort and the palm groves around it, then follow the coast road north. The small Al Bidyah Mosque, with its four rounded domes, is a peaceful stop and one of the oldest buildings in the UAE.
Further north, near Dibba, boats take snorkelers out to Snoopy Island, where you can see reef fish and sometimes turtles. In the evening, the Fujairah Corniche fills with families walking along the sea, with the dark outline of the mountains behind.
Good to know
The drive from Dubai takes around 90 minutes and crosses the Hajar Mountains. Stop at the roadside Friday Market in Masafi for fruit, plants and pottery, open every day despite its name.
The Gulf of Oman water is usually clearer than the Arabian Gulf side, which makes Fujairah the UAE's best region for diving and snorkeling. Winter and spring are the best seasons.
