Sousse is Tunisia's third-largest city and the center of the Sahel coast. Behind its beaches and hotel strip lies a walled medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with some of the oldest Islamic buildings in North Africa.
The medina
The Ribat of Sousse, a fortified monastery from the 8th and 9th centuries, has a watchtower with views over the medina and the port. Next to it, the Great Mosque dates from the mid-9th century and has a fortress-like courtyard. The souks wind uphill to the Kasbah, which houses the Archaeological Museum and its collection of Roman mosaics.
The coast
Boujaafar beach runs along the corniche north of the medina, lined with cafés and hotels. Further north, Port El Kantaoui is a purpose-built marina resort with white houses, boats and a golf course.
A walk through Sousse
Enter the medina through the gate near Place Farhat Hached, climb the Ribat tower and visit the Great Mosque courtyard. Then follow the main souk street uphill, past spice and textile shops, to the Kasbah and the Archaeological Museum.
Walk back down to the corniche in the late afternoon and stroll along Boujaafar beach, or take a taxi to Port El Kantaoui for the evening.
Good to know
Sousse lies on the main coastal railway, about two hours from Tunis, and is close to Monastir airport. The Sahel metro line links it to Monastir and Mahdia.
The beach season runs from May to October; the medina is pleasant year-round.
