Monastir is a seaside city on the Sahel coast, just south of Sousse. It is best known for its waterfront Ribat, one of the oldest in North Africa, and as the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president.
The Ribat and the mausoleum
The Ribat of Monastir was founded in the late 8th century as a fortified monastery to guard the coast. Its towers and walls look straight out to sea, and its stark look has made it a film location. Nearby, the Bourguiba Mausoleum, with its golden dome and twin minarets, stands at the end of a long ceremonial esplanade.
Medina and marina
The small medina keeps its walls and gates, with shops and cafés along its lanes. The marina and the corniche are where locals stroll in the evening, and beaches stretch along the bay toward the hotel zone of Skanes.
A walk through Monastir
Start at the Ribat and climb its watchtower, then cross the esplanade to the Bourguiba Mausoleum. Walk into the medina through one of its gates, explore its lanes and main street, and finish at the marina.
In the late afternoon, follow the corniche along the beach and watch the sunset behind the Ribat.
Good to know
Monastir's Habib Bourguiba International Airport is a main gateway for holidaymakers. The Sahel metro line links the city with Sousse and Mahdia.
The beaches are best from June to September, and spring is lovely for sightseeing.
