Hammamet, on the Cap Bon peninsula about an hour south of Tunis, is Tunisia's best-known beach town. Its small walled medina sits right on the sand, and a long bay of resorts stretches south to the marina of Yasmine Hammamet.
The medina
The medina of Hammamet is compact and whitewashed, with a Kasbah on its seaward corner whose walls give views along the bay. Inside, quiet residential lanes lead off a few souk streets of ceramics, carpets and leather, and the old cemetery lies right by the beach.
Gardens and resorts
In the 1920s Hammamet drew European artists and writers, and the villa of George Sebastian, with its gardens, is now the International Cultural Centre, which hosts a summer festival in its open-air theater. South of town, Yasmine Hammamet is a newer resort area with a marina and a large themed medina.
A walk through Hammamet
Start at the Kasbah and walk its ramparts, then lose yourself in the medina lanes before stepping out onto the beach in front of the walls. Follow the shore and the town's main avenue toward the Cultural Centre and its gardens.
In the evening, take a taxi to Yasmine Hammamet and walk around the marina. On another day, visit nearby Nabeul, known for its pottery and its weekly market.
Good to know
Hammamet is about an hour by road from Tunis-Carthage airport and also close to Enfidha airport. Louages, the shared minibuses, connect it with Tunis and Nabeul.
The summer beach season is busy; May, June and September offer warm sea and fewer crowds.
