Sukhothai, whose name means 'Dawn of Happiness', was the capital of the first independent Thai kingdom in the 13th century. Its graceful temple ruins, set among lotus ponds and lawns, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most peaceful places to explore in Thailand.
Sukhothai Historical Park
The historical park protects the remains of the old walled city. Its centerpiece is Wat Mahathat, the royal temple, with lotus-bud chedis and rows of seated Buddhas among standing columns. The elegant walking Buddha images of the Sukhothai period are considered masterpieces of Thai art.
Outside the walls, Wat Si Chum houses an enormous seated Buddha, about 15 meters tall, framed by the narrow entrance of a roofless mondop. Its slender fingers, covered in gold leaf by worshippers, are one of the most photographed sights in the park.
Exploring by bicycle
The ruins are spread out, so renting a bicycle is the best way to explore, gliding past moats, ponds and temples. Arrive early for the soft morning light and fewer visitors. The new town of Sukhothai, about 12 kilometers away, has guesthouses and markets.
Loy Krathong and tips
Sukhothai is closely associated with the Loy Krathong festival, held on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, usually in November, when people float small decorated baskets on the water. The historical park hosts a spectacular celebration with lights, fireworks and performances. Nearby Si Satchanalai Historical Park is quieter and also part of the UNESCO listing.
