Krabi, on Thailand's Andaman coast, is famous for towering limestone cliffs rising from turquoise water, white-sand beaches and more than a hundred islands. It is a paradise for beach lovers, rock climbers and island hoppers.
Railay and Ao Nang
Railay is a peninsula cut off from the mainland by limestone cliffs, so it can only be reached by boat. Its beaches, especially Phra Nang Cave Beach with its sheer cliffs and a cave shrine filled with offerings, are among the most beautiful in Thailand, and it is a world-class rock climbing destination.
Ao Nang is the main beach town, with a long promenade of restaurants and shops facing the sea and longtail boats waiting to take visitors to Railay and the islands. At golden hour, the views of the limestone islands are spectacular.
Islands and nature
The popular 'Four Islands' tour visits Poda Island, Chicken Island and Tup Island, where a sandbar connects two islands at low tide. The Hong Islands hide a lagoon surrounded by cliffs, and the Phi Phi Islands are a short boat ride away.
Inland, the Tiger Cave Temple has more than 1,200 steps leading to a hilltop Buddha with panoramic views, and the Emerald Pool is a natural hot spring pool in the forest.
Visiting tips
The best season is November to April, when the sea is calm and boat trips run smoothly. Krabi Town, the provincial capital, has a weekend walking street night market. Krabi's airport has connections to Bangkok and other Thai cities.
