Thailand's largest island is famous for its beaches on the Andaman Sea, but Phuket also has a colorful old town of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, hilltop viewpoints and a lively food scene shaped by its Chinese and Malay heritage.
Phuket Old Town
Phuket Town grew rich on the tin mining trade in the 19th century, and its historic streets, such as Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, are lined with pastel shophouses that blend Chinese and European styles. Today they house cafés, galleries and small shops.
On Sunday evenings, the Phuket Town Walking Street market, known locally as Lard Yai, fills Thalang Road with food stalls and street performers.
Beaches and viewpoints
Patong is the busiest beach resort, with Bangla Road becoming a neon-lit pedestrian party street after dark. For a calmer stay, Kata and Karon offer long sandy beaches, while Nai Harn in the south is loved for its relaxed atmosphere.
Promthep Cape, at the southern tip of the island, is the classic place to watch the sunset. The Big Buddha, a 45-meter white marble statue on a hilltop, has panoramic views over the island's bays.
When to visit
The best time is the dry season from November to April, when the sea is calm. From May to October the monsoon brings rain and rough seas on the west coast, though prices are lower. Phuket is also the starting point for boat trips to Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands.
