Piran sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula on Slovenia's short Adriatic coast. Ruled by Venice for five centuries, it is a tightly packed town of narrow lanes, pastel houses and bell towers that look just like those of the lagoon city across the sea.

Tartini Square and the old town

The oval Tartini Square, once the inner harbor, is named after the violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, who was born here and whose statue stands in the middle. Around it are the red Venetian House, with its inscription 'Let them talk', and the town hall.

Narrow lanes lead up to the Church of Saint George, whose bell tower is modeled on Saint Mark's in Venice and gives a view across the rooftops to Croatia and Italy.

The walls and the seafront

The town walls on the hill above Piran have battlements you can walk along for a panorama of the peninsula. The seafront promenade wraps around the tip of the town to the lighthouse, with ladders into the clear water for swimming.

The resort of Portorož is a short walk or bus ride along the coast, and the Sečovlje salt pans, where salt is still made by hand, lie just to the south.
