Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest and greenest capitals, with a car-free center along the Ljubljanica river. Its Baroque old town, Art Nouveau facades and the bridges and markets designed by the architect Jože Plečnik give it a harmonious, almost theatrical charm.
Prešeren Square and the bridges
Prešeren Square, with its pink Franciscan church and statue of the national poet France Prešeren, is the meeting point of the city. From here, Plečnik's Triple Bridge crosses the river to the old town, and nearby the Dragon Bridge is guarded by four bronze dragons, the symbol of Ljubljana.
Plečnik also designed the riverside market colonnade and the National and University Library, and his work in the city is listed by UNESCO.
The old town and the castle
The old town stretches along the foot of Castle Hill, with Baroque buildings, the Robba Fountain and Saint Nicholas Cathedral. A funicular climbs to Ljubljana Castle, whose tower gives a view over the red roofs to the Alps on clear days.
The riverbanks are lined with cafés under weeping willows, busy from morning to late evening, and tour boats cruise the river in summer.
Parks and practical tips
Tivoli Park, a large green space with promenades and a hill forest, starts right at the edge of the center. The former military barracks of Metelkova are now an alternative art and nightlife zone covered in murals.
The center is compact and flat, ideal for walking or cycling. Lake Bled is less than an hour away, and the coast about an hour and a half.
