Lake Bled, at the foot of the Julian Alps, is one of the most famous views in Europe: a small church on a tiny island in emerald water, a medieval castle on a cliff above and snowy peaks behind. A six-kilometer path circles the whole lake.

Bled Island and the castle

Traditional wooden boats called pletna carry visitors to Bled Island, where 99 stone steps climb to the Church of the Assumption. Ringing its 'wishing bell' is said to make a wish come true.

Bled Castle, perched on a cliff more than 100 meters above the water, is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. Its terraces offer a view over the lake, the island and the mountains.

Viewpoints and nearby sights

A short hike from the lakeshore leads to the Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica viewpoints, the source of the classic postcard image. Vintgar Gorge, a few kilometers away, has a wooden walkway above a rushing turquoise river, and Lake Bohinj, larger and wilder, lies half an hour west in Triglav National Park.

Bled is about 50 minutes by car or bus from Ljubljana. Summer is busy; early mornings and autumn are quieter, and in winter the lake can be dusted with snow.
