Novi Sad, Serbia's second city, is the capital of the province of Vojvodina, a multicultural region of the Pannonian plain. Its relaxed center of pastel Habsburg-era buildings faces the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress across the Danube, and it was a European Capital of Culture in 2022.

The city center

Liberty Square is overlooked by the neo-Gothic Catholic Church of the Name of Mary and the City Hall. From here, the pedestrian Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets lead past cafés and shops to Danube Park, a romantic garden with a lake and old trees.

Petrovaradin Fortress

Across the bridge, Petrovaradin Fortress, called the 'Gibraltar on the Danube', was built by the Habsburgs in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its walls hide 16 kilometers of underground tunnels, and its famous clock tower has reversed hands, so that fishermen on the river could read the hour from afar.

Every July the fortress hosts the EXIT music festival, one of the biggest in Europe. Belgrade is about 40 minutes away by fast train.
