Niš is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and the birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. Serbia's third city has a big Ottoman fortress in its center, a lively pedestrian street and a reputation for the best grilled meat in the country.

The fortress and the center

Niš Fortress, built by the Ottomans in the 18th century on Roman and Byzantine foundations, is now a park with walls, a gate, a hammam and summer festivals. Across the Nišava river, King Milan Square and the pedestrian Obrenovićeva Street form the heart of the modern city.

Kazandžijsko Sokače, the old coppersmiths' lane, is a short street of restored Ottoman-era houses now full of cafés.

History around Niš

The Skull Tower, built by the Ottomans in 1809 from the skulls of Serbian rebels, is a haunting monument to the First Serbian Uprising. On the edge of the city, Mediana preserves the remains of a luxurious Roman imperial villa with mosaic floors.
