Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe, fought over by Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Habsburgs, and destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times. Today the Serbian capital is famous for its energy, its cafés and its nightlife, from bohemian taverns to clubs on boats moored along the rivers.
Kalemegdan and Knez Mihailova
Kalemegdan Fortress, on a ridge above the meeting of the Sava and the Danube, is now a huge park with walls, gates, museums and the Pobednik statue looking out over the rivers. At sunset, locals gather on the ramparts to watch the light over New Belgrade.
From the fortress, Knez Mihailova Street, the main pedestrian street, runs past 19th-century buildings, shops and cafés to Republic Square, with the National Museum and the National Theatre.
Skadarlija and the Temple of Saint Sava
Skadarlija is a sloping cobbled street once home to artists and poets, where traditional taverns called kafanas still serve grilled meat to the sound of live folk music.
The Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, dominates the skyline south of the center, its interior covered in glittering golden mosaics.
The rivers and practical tips
The Sava waterfront has been redeveloped with promenades, and in summer floating clubs called splavovi line the riverbanks. Zemun, a former Habsburg town now part of Belgrade, has a Danube promenade with fish restaurants and the Gardoš Tower.
Belgrade is easy to explore on foot and by bus. Summers are hot; spring and autumn are ideal.
