Yekaterinburg, in the Ural Mountains, is Russia's fourth-largest city and sits close to the border between Europe and Asia. It is known for its industrial history, modern art scene and the story of the last tsar's family.

The center

The Church on the Blood stands where the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and his family were killed in 1918. The Yeltsin Center is a modern museum about the 1990s. The Iset River and its dam form the city's 'Plotinka', a lively square.

Around the city

A monument outside the city marks the boundary between Europe and Asia. The Vysotsky skyscraper has an observation deck.
