Irkutsk, in eastern Siberia, is a historic trading city on the Angara River and the gateway to Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world. It is a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The city

Irkutsk is known for its carved wooden houses, many from the 19th century. The 130th Quarter is a restored area of wooden buildings with cafés. Karl Marx Street is the main avenue, and the Angara embankment is a pleasant walk.

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal holds about a fifth of the world's unfrozen fresh water. The village of Listvyanka, an hour away, is the closest point on the lake. In winter, the lake freezes into clear blue ice.
