Gdańsk, on the Baltic coast, was a rich Hanseatic trading city. Its colorful Main Town was rebuilt after the war, and it was here that the Solidarity movement began in 1980.
The Main Town
The Royal Way runs along Long Street and Long Market, lined with tall, narrow merchant houses, to the Neptune Fountain. The medieval crane on the Motława river was once the largest port crane in the world. St Mary's Church is one of the largest brick churches in the world.
History and coast
The European Solidarity Centre tells the story of the movement that helped end communism. Mariacka Street is known for amber shops. Sopot, with its long wooden pier, is a short train ride away.
