Coronado, about an hour from Panama City, is the most developed beach town on the Pacific 'Riviera', popular with weekenders and retirees.

The beach

Coronado's beach has a mix of black and white sand. Gated communities, golf courses and shopping centers line the Pan-American Highway.

The coast

Nearby beaches like Playa Gorgona, San Carlos and Playa Blanca each have their own character, from surf spots to resorts.

Why it is popular

Coronado was one of the first beach resorts on Panama's Pacific coast, developed in the 1940s, and it is now a large community with gated neighborhoods, golf courses, supermarkets and restaurants serving a big expatriate population. The beach has dark volcanic sand mixed with light sand and is good for long walks at low tide. Nearby beaches like Gorgona, San Carlos and Santa Clara have their own character, and El Valle de Antón is just 30 minutes inland in the mountains.
