Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, was one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road and several times the capital of Persia. Most of its people are Azerbaijanis, and the city is known for its carpets, its sweets and one of the largest covered bazaars in the world.

The bazaar

The Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast network of brick-vaulted lanes, domed halls and caravanserais. Its carpet section is one of the best places in Iran to watch traders at work, and its timchehs, domed trading halls, are among the most beautiful spaces in any bazaar.

Around the city

The Blue Mosque, built in 1465, was badly damaged by an earthquake, but fragments of its deep blue tilework still glow. The massive brick walls of the Arg of Tabriz rise in the center. El Goli, a park with a pavilion in the middle of a large pool, is a favorite place for evening walks. About an hour away, the village of Kandovan has homes carved into volcanic rock cones.
