Shiraz is the city of poets, roses and gardens. The burial place of the great Persian poets Hafez and Saadi, it is known for its relaxed atmosphere, and it is the gateway to Persepolis, the ancient capital of the Achaemenid kings.

Mosques, gardens and poets

The Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, nicknamed the Pink Mosque, is famous for its stained-glass windows that fill the prayer hall with colored light in the early morning. Eram Garden, part of the UNESCO-listed Persian Gardens, has cypress trees, pools and a Qajar pavilion.

The tomb of Hafez, in a garden with an open pavilion, is visited by Iranians who recite his verses and open his book to seek advice. The tomb of Saadi lies in another garden on the city's edge.

The old city and Persepolis

The Vakil Bazaar, built in the 18th century by Karim Khan Zand, has vaulted brick lanes, caravanserais and the Vakil Mosque. The Karim Khan Citadel, with its leaning corner tower, stands nearby. About 60 kilometers northeast lie Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of Darius and Xerxes, and the royal tombs of Naqsh-e Rostam.

Visiting tips

Visit the Pink Mosque soon after it opens for the best light. Spring, when the orange trees blossom, is the loveliest season. Check current travel advice before planning a visit.
