Isfahan was the capital of Safavid Persia in the 16th and 17th centuries, and its splendor gave rise to the saying 'Isfahan is half the world'. Its turquoise domes, arched bridges and great square make it the most beautiful city in Iran.
Naqsh-e Jahan Square
Naqsh-e Jahan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest city squares in the world, surrounded by two-story arcades of shops. At its south end, the Shah Mosque is covered inside and out in blue tiles. On the east side, the smaller Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque has a dome whose tiles change color with the light, and opposite stands the Ali Qapu Palace, with a terrace once used by the shahs to watch polo matches.
At the north end, the gateway of the Qeysarieh Bazaar leads into kilometers of covered lanes selling carpets, miniatures, enamelwork and sweets.
The bridges and Jolfa
Historic bridges cross the Zayandeh River, including the 33-arched Si-o-se-pol and the Khaju Bridge, where people gather in the evening. The river is often dry for much of the year because of drought and water diversion. South of the river, the Armenian quarter of New Jolfa is home to the Vank Cathedral, decorated with vivid frescoes.
Visiting tips
The square is magical at sunset and after dark, when families picnic on the lawns. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summers are hot. Check current travel advice before planning a visit.
