Mykonos is the Cycladic island of whitewashed cube houses, blue shutters and bougainvillea, with a famous reputation for beaches and nightlife. Its main town, Chora, is a beautiful maze of narrow lanes that was designed to confuse pirates, and today it is a pleasure to get lost in.
Chora and Little Venice
Chora, also called Mykonos Town, wraps around the old harbor. Its lanes are paved with stone outlined in white paint, and lined with boutiques, chapels and small bars. Look out for Petros the pelican, the island's mascot, who often wanders around the waterfront.
Little Venice is a row of 18th-century captains' houses built right on the edge of the sea, with balconies over the water. It is one of the most popular sunset spots in Greece, and the five famous windmills of Kato Mili stand on the hill just above.
Beaches and island life
Mykonos has beaches for every taste, from lively ones with beach clubs and music, such as Paradise and Super Paradise, to calmer family bays like Ornos and Agios Stefanos. The quieter northern beaches are often windy, which makes them popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Inland, the village of Ano Mera has a peaceful square and the Panagia Tourliani monastery. Boats leave from Mykonos for the tiny island of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and the mythical birthplace of Apollo.
Visiting tips
Mykonos is expensive and crowded in high summer. June and September offer warm seas and a calmer atmosphere. The meltemi wind blows strongly in July and August. Ferries link the island to Athens, Santorini and the other Cyclades.
