Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete, a busy, modern place built over a long history. Venetian walls, fountains and a harbor fortress remain from the past, and just outside the city lies Knossos, the legendary palace of King Minos and the center of Europe's first great civilization.
Knossos and the Minoans
The Palace of Knossos, five kilometers south of the center, was the heart of the Minoan civilization about 3,500 years ago. Its maze of rooms is linked to the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth. Parts of the site were partially reconstructed in the early 20th century, giving visitors an idea of its colorful frescoes and columns.
To understand the Minoans, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the most important in Greece. It holds the original frescoes, the mysterious Phaistos Disc and the famous snake goddess figurines.
The Venetian city
In the center, Lions Square is named after the Morosini Fountain, built by the Venetians in 1628. Nearby, the Loggia, now the city hall, and the Basilica of Saint Mark recall Venetian rule. 25th August Street leads down to the old harbor, guarded by the Koules fortress, which you can walk around and climb for views.
The Venetian walls still surround the old city, and on the Martinengo bastion lies the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis, the author of Zorba the Greek, with the words: 'I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.'
Visiting tips
Visit Knossos early in the morning to avoid heat and tour groups. Heraklion's airport is the main gateway to Crete, and the city is a good base for exploring the beaches and villages of central Crete.
