Meteora, in central Greece, is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe. Huge sandstone pillars rise hundreds of meters above the plain of Thessaly, and on top of them monks built monasteries that seem to hang in the sky. The name means 'suspended in the air'.

The monasteries

Hermits began living in caves in the rocks in the 11th century, and from the 14th century monks built monasteries on the summits. In the past, the only way up was by long ladders or by nets pulled up with ropes. Of more than twenty monasteries, six are still active and open to visitors.

The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest, with a museum and a beautifully painted church. Varlaam, Roussanou, Holy Trinity, which appeared in a James Bond film, St Stephen and St Nicholas Anapafsas each have their own character, frescoes and views. Each monastery is closed on one or two days a week, so check before you go.

Kalambaka and Kastraki

The town of Kalambaka sits right at the foot of the rocks and is the main base for visitors, with hotels, tavernas and a Byzantine church. The smaller village of Kastraki, closer to the pillars, has a more peaceful, village feel. Old footpaths lead from both up to the monasteries, which is the best way to appreciate the size of the rocks.

Visiting tips

Dress modestly for the monasteries: shoulders and knees must be covered, and women are asked to wear skirts, which are usually provided at the entrance. Sunset viewpoints along the main road are spectacular. Meteora can be reached by train from Athens or Thessaloniki.
