Tirana has changed dramatically since the fall of communism in 1991. Grey apartment blocks have been painted in bright colors, the old leaders' district has become the trendiest neighborhood, and the city's cafés are packed day and night. It is energetic, friendly and full of surprises.
Skanderbeg Square and the center
Skanderbeg Square, a vast pedestrian plaza paved with stones from all over Albania, is dominated by a statue of the national hero on horseback. Around it stand the National History Museum, with its huge socialist-realist mosaic, the Et'hem Bey Mosque with its painted interior, and the Clock Tower.
Nearby, the Pyramid, built as a museum for the dictator Enver Hoxha, has been transformed into a tech and culture center with steps you can climb to the top.
Blloku and the bunkers
Blloku, once a closed residential area reserved for the communist elite, is now the city's liveliest district of bars, cafés and boutiques. Enver Hoxha's villa still stands on one of its corners.
Albania built hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers during the communist era. Two of the biggest, Bunk'Art 1 and Bunk'Art 2, are now museums about the history of the regime.
Markets and practical tips
The New Bazaar, Pazari i Ri, is a colorful market square of produce stalls and restaurants. The Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs Mount Dajti for a view over the whole city.
Tirana is easy to walk, and buses connect it to every part of the country. Summers are hot, while spring and autumn are pleasant.
