Berat is known as the 'City of a Thousand Windows' for the white Ottoman houses that rise in rows up the hillside above the Osum river, their many windows looking out over the valley. With its inhabited castle and churches, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mangalem and Gorica
The Mangalem quarter, on the slope below the castle, is the classic view of Berat: tiers of white houses with large windows. Across the river, linked by a seven-arched stone bridge, the quieter Gorica quarter faces it.
In the evening, the riverside boulevard fills with families and friends for the xhiro, the traditional evening stroll.
The castle
Berat Castle, at the top of the hill, is still lived in. Inside its walls are cobbled lanes, houses and Byzantine churches, one of which holds the Onufri Museum, displaying icons by the 16th-century master painter Onufri.
