Sarandë is the main town of the Albanian Riviera, a horseshoe of apartment buildings around a bay facing the Greek island of Corfu. Its palm-lined promenade comes alive on summer evenings, and some of the most beautiful beaches and ruins in Albania are a short drive away.

The promenade and the town

The seafront promenade runs the length of the bay, lined with cafés and restaurants and packed with strollers at sunset. In the center are the ruins of a 5th-century synagogue and basilica, and on the hill above, Lëkurësi Castle offers views over the bay and Corfu.

Butrint, Ksamil and the Blue Eye

The ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO site with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins in a lagoon forest, is 30 minutes south. On the way, the village of Ksamil has small white beaches facing tiny islands in turquoise water.

Inland, the Blue Eye is a deep spring of astonishingly clear blue water. Ferries connect Sarandë with Corfu in about 30 minutes.
