Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1218, and its sandstone buildings glow gold in the evening sun. A lively student population keeps the city young, and its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Plaza Mayor
The Plaza Mayor, completed in the 18th century, is often called the most beautiful square in Spain. Its arcades are decorated with medallions of kings and famous Spaniards, and it is the city's living room, full of café terraces by day and students gathering at night, when the facades are softly illuminated.
The university and cathedrals
The facade of the University of Salamanca is a masterpiece of Plateresque carving. Hidden among its details is a small frog sitting on a skull; tradition says students who spot it will pass their exams. Inside, the historic lecture halls and library can be visited.
Salamanca has two cathedrals joined together: the Romanesque Old Cathedral and the Gothic and Baroque New Cathedral. The Ieronimus tour lets you climb their towers and walk along interior balconies. Look for the astronaut carved on the New Cathedral's doorway during a 20th-century restoration.
More to see
The Casa de las Conchas is a 15th-century palace covered in carved scallop shells, and the Convento de San Esteban has a stunning carved facade. The Roman Bridge crosses the Tormes River with fine views of the city. Salamanca is about 1 hour 40 minutes from Madrid by train.
