Palma, the capital of the Balearic island of Mallorca, is much more than a beach destination. Its old town of golden stone, courtyards and narrow lanes is crowned by one of Spain's most spectacular cathedrals, rising straight above the Mediterranean.

La Seu and the old town

Palma Cathedral, known as La Seu, was begun in the 13th century on the site of a mosque. Its Gothic nave is one of the tallest in the world, and its great rose window fills the interior with colored light. Antoni Gaudí worked on its restoration in the early 20th century, adding a striking canopy over the altar.

Beside it, the Almudaina Palace, once a Moorish fortress, is still used for royal ceremonies. Behind them, the old town's lanes hide grand mansions with patios, the Arab Baths and the elegant Plaza Mayor.

Seafront and neighborhoods

The Parc de la Mar, a park with a lake in front of the cathedral, leads to a long seafront promenade along the bay, ideal for walking or cycling. The Paseo del Borne is Palma's elegant boulevard of shops and cafés.

Santa Catalina, a former fishermen's neighborhood, is now one of the trendiest areas, with a lively market and international restaurants. On a wooded hill to the west, Bellver Castle is a rare circular Gothic castle with views over the city and harbor.

Exploring Mallorca

From Palma, it is easy to explore the island: the mountain villages of Valldemossa and Deià in the Serra de Tramuntana, the vintage wooden train to Sóller, and countless coves with turquoise water. Summer is very busy; spring and autumn are perfect for walking and cycling.
