Suwon, about an hour south of Seoul, is home to Hwaseong Fortress, a remarkable 18th-century fortification that encircles the old city. Built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from the capital.
Hwaseong Fortress
Completed in 1796, Hwaseong Fortress stretches for nearly six kilometers, with gates, watchtowers, bastions and command posts that blend Korean tradition with what was then the latest military engineering. A walk along the walls takes about two to three hours and offers views over the city.
Highlights include Paldalmun and Janganmun, the grand southern and northern gates, Hwahongmun, a seven-arched water gate, and the elegant Banghwasuryujeong pavilion overlooking a lotus pond. At night, the walls are softly lit.
Haenggung Palace and the old town
Inside the walls, Hwaseong Haenggung was a temporary palace used by the king when he visited. It hosts traditional performances and a changing of the guard. The surrounding Haenggung-dong neighborhood is full of murals, craft workshops, cafés and small restaurants, perfect for an alley tour.
Visiting tips
Suwon is reachable from Seoul by subway line 1 or by train. The Korean Folk Village in nearby Yongin recreates life in the Joseon era. The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival in early autumn features a reenactment of the king's royal procession.
