Jeju Island, off Korea's southern coast, was formed by volcanic eruptions and is dominated by Hallasan, South Korea's highest mountain. Its volcanic landscapes, lava tubes and coastline are a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, and its mild climate makes it Korea's favorite holiday island.
Jeju City
Jeju City, on the north coast, is the island's main town and the arrival point for most visitors. Dongmun Market is the oldest traditional market on the island, packed with stalls selling tangerines, seafood and street food, and its night market comes alive in the evenings, as the walking tour shows.
The city has a famous 'black pork street', lined with restaurants grilling Jeju's prized black pig, and the seaside Yongduam Rock, shaped like a dragon's head, is a short walk from the center.
Volcanic wonders
Seongsan Ilchulbong, or Sunrise Peak, is a tuff cone rising straight from the sea on the east coast; the climb to its crater rim at dawn is a classic Jeju experience. Manjanggul is one of the longest lava tubes in the world, and hikers can climb Hallasan to its crater lake on a long but rewarding day hike.
Jeju is also famous for its haenyeo, female free divers who have harvested seafood from the sea for generations, a tradition recognized by UNESCO.
Beaches and green tea
Hyeopjae and Hamdeok are among the island's most beautiful beaches, with turquoise water and white sand. Inland, the O'sulloc green tea fields roll across the countryside. Driving the coastal roads, as in the drive videos, is the best way to see the island. Jeju is about an hour's flight from Seoul.
