Košice, Slovakia's second city, has one of the largest and best-preserved historic centers in the country. Its old town is built around a single long, lens-shaped main street lined with Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, and it was a European Capital of Culture in 2013.

Hlavná Street

Hlavná, the main street, widens in the middle into a long square holding the city's landmarks. Saint Elisabeth Cathedral is the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe and the largest church in Slovakia, with a tower you can climb.

Next to it stand the Urban Tower and the Chapel of Saint Michael, and a little further on, the neo-Baroque State Theatre faces a park with a 'singing fountain' that dances to music in the evenings.

Beyond the main street

Hrnčiarska, the Street of Crafts, has small workshops of potters, smiths and other artisans. The East Slovak Museum holds the Košice Gold Treasure, a hoard of nearly 3,000 gold coins found during building work in 1935.

Košice has an international airport and is a good base for the castles and caves of eastern Slovakia.
