Bratislava, the Slovak capital, sits on the Danube right on the borders of Austria and Hungary. For centuries it was the coronation city of Hungarian kings, and its small, walkable old town of Baroque palaces and cobbled squares is full of cafés and quirky bronze statues.

The Old Town

The Main Square, with its Roland Fountain and the Old Town Hall, is the center of the old town. Nearby, Michael's Gate, the only surviving gate of the medieval walls, has a tower with a view over the rooftops.

Bronze statues hide around the streets, the most famous being Čumil, a worker peeking out of a manhole. Saint Martin's Cathedral, where eleven Hungarian kings were crowned, has a golden crown on top of its spire.

The castle and the Danube

Bratislava Castle, a white square building with four corner towers, stands on a hill above the river and holds a history museum. Across the Danube, the SNP Bridge, known as the UFO Bridge, has a flying-saucer-shaped restaurant and viewing deck on top of its pylon.

East of the old town, the Church of Saint Elizabeth, known as the Blue Church, is an Art Nouveau gem painted entirely in pale blue.

Practical tips

The old town is small enough to see in a day. Vienna is an hour away by train or boat, and Devín Castle, a ruined fortress where the Morava meets the Danube, is a short bus ride west.
