Sighișoara is one of the last inhabited medieval citadels in Europe, a hilltop town of colorful houses, towers and cobbled lanes that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the prince whose name inspired the legend of Dracula.

The citadel

The 64-meter Clock Tower, built in the 14th century, guards the main gate and houses a history museum; its painted wooden figures change each day of the week. Nine of the original guild towers still stand along the walls, each named after the craftsmen who defended it, such as the shoemakers, tailors and tinsmiths.

Just off the main square is the house where Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, was born around 1431. From the square, the Covered Stairway, a wooden tunnel of 176 steps, climbs to the Church on the Hill and its old Saxon cemetery.

Visiting tips

Sighișoara is small and can be seen in a day, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the citadel after the tour groups leave. The Medieval Festival in July fills the streets with music and costumes. The nearby Saxon villages, such as Biertan, have UNESCO-listed fortified churches.
