Cluj-Napoca, the unofficial capital of Transylvania, is Romania's second-largest city and its liveliest student town. With a large university population, a booming tech scene and the UNTOLD music festival, it combines a historic center with a young, energetic atmosphere.

Union Square and the old town

Union Square is dominated by the Gothic St. Michael's Church and the equestrian statue of Matthias Corvinus, the Hungarian king who was born in Cluj in 1443; his birthplace still stands a few streets away. The square is surrounded by palaces, including the Bánffy Palace, home of the National Art Museum.

From here, pedestrian streets lead to Museum Square, the oldest square in the city, and to the Orthodox Cathedral and the National Theatre on Avram Iancu Square. Remains of the medieval walls include the Tailors' Bastion.

Parks and day trips

Central Park, with its lake and the old casino, runs along the Someș River, and Cetățuia Hill offers the best view over the rooftops. The university's Botanical Garden is one of the largest in Southeast Europe. About 30 kilometers away, the Salina Turda salt mine has been turned into an underground world with a Ferris wheel and a lake.

Visiting tips

The city is at its busiest during the academic year and in August, when the UNTOLD festival takes over Central Arena. Cluj is a good base for exploring the Apuseni Mountains and the villages of Transylvania.
