Skopje is a city of contrasts. Its Old Bazaar is one of the largest in the Balkans, while the modern center across the Vardar river was rebuilt with dozens of monuments, fountains and neoclassical facades in the 2010s. It is also the birthplace of Mother Teresa.

Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge

Macedonia Square is dominated by a giant statue of a 'Warrior on a Horse', widely understood to represent Alexander the Great, surrounded by fountains. The 15th-century Stone Bridge crosses the Vardar to the old town, with more statues and grand buildings along the riverbanks.

The Memorial House of Mother Teresa stands on the site of the church where she was baptized.

The Old Bazaar and the fortress

The Old Bazaar, Čaršija, is a labyrinth of shops, Ottoman inns, mosques and teahouses dating back to the 12th century. The Mustafa Pasha Mosque and the Daut Pasha Hamam, now an art gallery, are among its finest buildings.

Above it, Kale Fortress gives views over the city. On Mount Vodno, a cable car climbs to the Millennium Cross, and Matka Canyon, with its lake and caves, is a short drive away.
