Ohrid sits on the shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. Its old town once had 365 churches, one for every day of the year, and the town and lake together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both their nature and their culture.
The old town
The old town climbs a hill above the harbor, with whitewashed Ottoman-era houses, the Cathedral of Saint Sophia with its 11th-century frescoes, and a Roman amphitheater. At the top, Samuel's Fortress looks out over the lake and the mountains of Albania on the far shore.
Saint John at Kaneo and the lake
The small Church of Saint John at Kaneo, perched on a cliff above the water, is one of the most photographed views in the Balkans. A wooden boardwalk along the cliffs connects it to the town's beaches.
Boats sail to the monastery of Saint Naum at the southern end of the lake, near the springs of the Black Drin. Summer evenings are lively, with a festival of music and theater in July and August.
