Wanaka, on the South Island, is a relaxed lakeside town surrounded by mountains. It is a calmer alternative to Queenstown and a base for hiking and skiing.

The lake

That Wanaka Tree, a willow growing in the lake, is one of the most photographed trees in the world. The lakefront has cafés and beaches.

Mountains

Roys Peak is a famous hike with views over the lake. Mount Aspiring National Park and the ski fields of Cardrona and Treble Cone are nearby.

A day in Wanaka

Wanaka is a lakeside town that feels like Queenstown's quieter, more laid-back sibling. The most famous sight is the lone willow tree growing in the water near the lakeshore, known as 'That Wanaka Tree', especially beautiful at sunrise. The lakefront path runs past it and continues along the shore, perfect for an easy walk or bike ride.

Energetic visitors climb Roys Peak, a steep five- to six-hour hike rewarded with one of New Zealand's most photographed views over Lake Wanaka and its islands. Mount Iron is a much shorter climb with a fine panorama.

Seasons in Wanaka

In winter, the ski fields of Cardrona and Treble Cone are close by, and the town fills with skiers. In summer, people swim, paddleboard and kayak on the lake, and the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park offers hikes to glaciers such as the Rob Roy Glacier.

Autumn, from March to May, is a special time, when the poplars and willows around the lake turn gold. Wanaka is also known for its relaxed café scene and a quirky attraction, Puzzling World, with its leaning tower and illusion rooms.
