Utrecht is a lively university city in the center of the Netherlands, with a medieval heart that feels more relaxed than Amsterdam. Its canals are unique: the old wharves sit at water level, below the streets, and their cellars have been turned into cafés with terraces right by the water.
The Dom and the canals
The Dom Tower, at 112 meters, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Climb its 465 steps for a view that reaches Amsterdam on a clear day. A violent storm in 1674 destroyed the nave of the cathedral, which is why the tower stands separately from the remaining church, and the gap is now a square.
The Oudegracht, the main canal, curves through the center. Its lower-level wharves, once used to unload goods into cellars under the streets, now hold restaurants and cafés, and the canal is lovely to explore by boat or by canoe.
Museums and the bicycle city
The Centraal Museum includes the Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO-listed icon of the De Stijl movement. Miffy, the famous little rabbit, was created in Utrecht by Dick Bruna, and has her own museum for young children. The Speelklok Museum displays music boxes and street organs.
Utrecht is a true cycling city, with the largest bicycle parking garage in the world, holding around 12,500 bikes, next to the central station.
Visiting tips
Utrecht is only about 25 minutes from Amsterdam by train, making it an easy day trip. The canal-side terraces are at their best on summer evenings. Saturday markets fill the Vredenburg square.
