Podgorica, Montenegro's capital and largest city, was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt as a modern city. It is a relaxed place of cafés and parks along the Morača and Ribnica rivers, and a gateway to Lake Skadar and the mountains.
The city center and the rivers
Republic Square and the pedestrian streets around it form the center, packed with cafés. The cable-stayed Millennium Bridge crosses the Morača river, whose deep turquoise water runs through a canyon in the middle of the city.
Stara Varoš, the old Ottoman quarter, keeps a clock tower and a small mosque, and the modern Cathedral of the Resurrection is decorated with gold mosaics. Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, is half an hour away.
