Prizren, in the south of Kosovo, is its most beautiful town, with an Ottoman old center on both banks of the Bistrica river. Mosques, churches and hammams stand among old houses, and a fortress on the hill above gives a view over the red roofs and minarets.
The Stone Bridge and Shadervan
The Ottoman Stone Bridge arches over the river at the heart of the town. Around Shadervan Square, with its old fountain, cafés fill the cobblestones, and the Sinan Pasha Mosque, built in 1615, rises above the river with its tall dome and minaret.
The Serbian Orthodox Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš, with its 14th-century frescoes, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fortress and Dokufest
A steep path climbs to the Prizren Fortress, whose walls frame a sweeping view of the town and the mountains, especially beautiful at sunset. Every August the international documentary festival Dokufest fills the town with screenings in open-air cinemas.
